Course Description:

Participation Based Goal Writing within the Medical Model is for all agency clinicians and addresses the expectations for Plan of Care development at THERAPY 2000. The training includes approximately one hour of preparatory work to familiarize the participant with the philosophy and purpose of goal establishment as part of the Plan of Care, based on the tenets of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Model. Participants will discover how to best utilize primary factors from the evaluation or re-evaluation process to create a meaningful, medically-focused plan of care.  THERAPY 2000’s guidelines for development of short and long term goals will be discussed and utilized within the training so that clinicians have the tools needed to meet industry standards, as well as to support the needs and priorities of children and families.

About Our Speaker:

Kathy Clapsaddle, M.S., CCC-SLP

Speech Program Director

Kathy Clapsaddle, M.S., CCC-SLP is a Program Director for Speech Language Pathology for THERAPY 2000 and the Division Director for the Austin division.  She received her Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 1999.  Kathy considers herself to be a “therapy geek.”  She has served as a Speech Language Pathologist, a university instructor, professional educator, and a leader.  She is currently the Vice President of Research and Development for the Texas Speech Language Hearing Association, and she serves on the Editorial Board for Evidence Based Practices (EBP) Briefs.  Her areas of interest include service delivery, autism, emergent literacy development and augmentative and alternative communication. She has presented across the state on issues related to Speech Language Pathology services in school and medical settings.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Describe the philosophy and purpose of short term and long term goals as part of the plan of care (based on course pre-work).
  2. Identify the main factors to consider in creating a plan of care – child’s medical needs, caregiver priorities and resources, assessment data/clinical observations – and the contribution that each of these factors makes to the goals, interventions and dosage.
  3. Utilize identified factors to develop long term and short term goals based on goal development structure and guidelines provided.
