clinical excellenceClinical excellence is one of THERAPY 2000’s core values. as a benefit of joining Therapy 2000, you have access to live and on-demand, high-quality, free CE courses all year long!

On June 28th at 10 am Therapy 2000 will be hosting a new continuing education course available to all employees over implementing the new IDDSI standard for the treatment of dysphagia.

Dysphagia is a condition which involves difficulty or inability to swallow. Many think swallowing as simple since it is such a commonplace bodily function, when in reality swallowing is a very complex process.  It takes your brain, several nerves and muscles, two muscular valves, and an open, unconstricted esophagus, or swallowing tube just to swallow. Dysphagia can result from several conditions including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, disturbances in the brain, tumors, and strokes. IDDSI can be used by dysphagia therapists and dieticians to more accurately create meal plans and therapeutic practices to treat dysphagia and establish healthy feeding and consumption practices.

About the IDDSI standard

In response to the need for proper treatment terminology for dysphagia, a global standard known as the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) was created. IDDSI is composed of terminology and definitions to describe texture modified foods and thickened liquids used for individuals with dysphagia of all ages, in all care settings, and for all cultures.

This course covers:

  • The purpose of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative,
  • Descriptors, testing methods, and evidence from research, and
  • How to use the standardized testing methods to identify and produce liquids and foods from Levels 0-7.

Be prepared to mix, play with, and identify all 8 different levels in the framework, so that you’ll have a thorough understanding of the IDDSI framework and be able to use it in any workplace environment. Using PowerPoint presentation, lecture, discussion, and practice with the BD 10ml syringe, we’ll feel confident using this new system.
