This 3 hour training will cover the anatomy and function of the eye, normal visual development and signs of potential vision disorder in children. The meaning of “low vision’ and ‘blindness’ will be discussed, and common visual disorders therapists encounter in the pediatric population will be explored. Roles and responsibilities of the various members of the medical neighborhood for a child with low vision/blindness will be described. In addition, the training will provide insight into evidence based strategies to guide evaluations, therapy sessions, and caregiver education.
As a result of this presentation the participant will be able to…
- Discuss the anatomy of the eye and normal vision development
- Define “low vision’ and ‘blindness’ and identify at least 3 common pediatric visual impairments
- Describe the roles and responsibilities of other service providers who work with children with visual impairments
- List at least 5 strategies to utilize with children who have visual impairments during evaluation, treatment, and caregiver training.
