Description:

With the increasing research and validation in treatment, augmentative and alternative communication systems are essential knowledge to have in the SLP’s toolbox. This course will cover the essentials and confidence you need going forward with AAC in your practice. We will cover various types of AAC from low tech to high tech options, help you determine if your child is ready for AAC, provide you with knowledge on implementation of AAC, and help you understand the process of evaluation and treatment opportunities. We will review the importance of core and fringe vocabulary while also reviewing the benefits of organizing vocabulary in a way that supports motor planning.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify 3 types of AAC (low tech, mid tech, high tech options)
  2. Participants will be able to name at least 2 signs of AAC readiness.
  3. Participants will be able to list at least 2 assessment tools for evaluating a child with AAC needs.
  4. Participants will be able to describe at least 3 ways to organize vocabulary that allows for motor planning of words, automaticity, and speed.
