Facilitator: Ashlyn Hudson, MOT, M.Ed

Ashlyn Hudson is a cheerleader at heart and a special educator and occupational therapist by training. She holds a M.Ed. from Texas Women’s University and a MOT from University of Texas Medical Branch. Throughout her career she has found passion in providing support for access and independence in the classroom, home and community while working with a wide range of individuals with diverse abilities and ages.

Description: Louis Braille once said, “access to communication…is access to knowledge.” In a world rich with ever evolving technology, new doors to accessibility have opened for individuals with complex communication needs and complex bodies. For those of us working to support these individuals and increase their access, it can be overwhelming to stay current. This session will introduce various access methods for communication, as well as tips for identifying appropriate access methods for the individuals you support. This is the first part in a series of sessions designed to provide in depth knowledge on various access methods for communication.

Objectives:

Following this session, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify 4 access methods for communication
  2. Utilize access method selection tool to match appropriate individuals to each access method
  3. Describe assessment process for determining appropriate access methods
