At T2K/GAT, a commitment to lifelong learning is woven into our culture and practices. As adult learners, Knowles’ (1973) principles persist and continue to be explored in the literature.
Based on Knowles (1973), let’s keep the following in mind regarding what adult learners want, need, and prefer, as we explore the magnificence and complexity of the adult learning process:
– We want to know why we are learning something
– We are most receptive to learning when we know/feel the subject will be useful immediately
– We learn best through doing
– We learn more when we are able to use our problem solving skills during the process
– Social interaction supports our ability to learn
– We need the opportunity to apply life experiences while learning, and to integrate new ideas with our existing knowledge
What do those theoretical concepts mean for teaching, training, or disseminating information to others, and how do we utilize them to make the greatest impact? One response might be, “So much pressure!” But what about the possibilities, “So much opportunity!”
During our time together, we will explore these opportunities…from the practical application of adult learning principles to the nitty-gritty of developing visual teaching aids (such as powerpoint and learning guides), and everything in between. You will leave with new knowledge and skills, as well as a deeper understanding of how you can best make an impact when sharing information with others.
CEUs/CCUs are not available for this training, but all participants will have the opportunity to provide feedback about the training in order to receive a certificate of completion.
