Description: This training will address treatment strategies for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing patients. The training will include information about the consequences of language deprivation, and move to discuss different treatment outcomes, including the use of visual language (such as American Sign Language), listening and spoken language, and alternative/augmentative communication. The training will cover goal writing in each of these areas and include considerations for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients with multiple disabilities. The information will be applied in a case study of a current patient.

Objectives:

Following the training, participants will be able to…

  1. Describe potential effects of language deprivation in Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients.
  2. Describe how to use language facilitation strategies in different communication modalities (I.e. visual language, listening and spoken language) with Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients.
  3. Discuss communication considerations for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients with multiple disabilities.
  4. Produce measurable goals targeting expressive and receptive language in different communication modalities for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients.
