Description:
The neurodiversity movement began in the 1990s with a focus on embracing neurological differences and expanding acceptance and inclusion of all people. The movement promotes the idea that there is no ‘right’ way to think, learn, or behave, emphasizing that people experience the world around them and interact with others in a variety of ways (Baumer & Frueh, 2021).
Throughout the last two years at THERAPY 2000, we have had the opportunity to learn from many experts who identify their practices as neurodiversity-affirming, including some who are autistic themselves Hopefully you were able to attend the amazing learning experiences with Meg Proctor, Rachel Dorsey, Katie Arnold, Mike McLeod, Cari Ebert, Kelly Mahler, and Catherine Murray & Becky Gottlieb (DIR/Floortime).
Our pediatric home health therapy setting is a unique one. Join Vanessa Reynolds, MS, CCC-SLP, and Jennifer Lawson, OTR, MS for this 3-hour course to explore the neurodiversity movement and neurodiversity-affirming practice as it relates directly to the language and terminology we use, how we approach assessment and goal development, and the focus and type of interventions we utilize. Additionally, we will address the ways we collaborate with caregivers and coordinate care with others within a child’s medical neighborhood. A variety of practical tools, strategies and resources will be included.
