Description:

Writing letters of medical necessity for mobility impaired clients for Complex Rehab Technology has become increasingly more challenging. This class will explain why Complex Rehab Equipment gets denied and what’s missing from the documentation. The evaluation process will be explored and occupational and physical therapists will be provided with strategies that will help identify all the avenues to explore in determining if the patient meets the prior authorization criteria for the requested equipment. The focus will then shift to the LMN. How you document makes all the difference as the therapists’ voice often carries the most weight when it comes to authorizing or denying complex rehab equipment. This class will help the therapist understand the relationship between the LMN and your client’s insurance policy. You will also learn documentation strategies that will improve your approach to writing a Letter of Medical Necessity and amplify your voice in the LMN.

Objectives:

  1. List 2 differences between Medicare/Commercial Insurance Policy and Medicaid.
  2. List 4 types of complex rehab equipment that is most commonly denied and identify the three most common reasons complex rehab equipment is denied.
  3. Describe one evaluation strategy that will enable you to obtain more detailed clinical information about your client and their mobility needs.
  4. Describe a documentation tool that will enable you to generate clear, concise, undisputable letters of medical necessity that address both your client’s mobility needs and their coverage criteria.
  5. Implement new documentation strategies to effectively fill out a Wheelchair Evaluation Form/LMN that satisfies the client’s policy requirements.
