Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)

Pediatric Occupational TherapyPediatric occupational therapy helps children with special needs achieve independence and enhance their quality of life. The focus of treatment is to facilitate and empower the child and family to achieve the highest level of functional independence possible. According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, occupational therapy is “the therapeutic use of self-care, work, and play activities to increase independent function, enhance development, and prevent disability. It may include adaptation of task or environment to achieve maximum independence and to enhance the quality of life.” Occupational therapists can help children with birth injuries, developmental delays, neurological disorders, autism spectrum disorder,  ADHD, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, diseases, trauma and many other conditions. Occupational therapists specialize in evaluating, treating and restoring loss of function in these situations. Pediatric occupational therapy uses age appropriate daily life play and activities to engage a child and family in the therapeutic process. Activities of daily living (ADL) for children include, but are not limited to feeding, dressing, bathing, grooming, playing, learning and household chores – activities vital to their daily function. Pediatric occupational therapy may include making changes to tasks and environment, as well as special equipment training, in order to increase independence and quality of life of a patient. The occupational therapist is a vital part of the medical team necessary for the rehabilitation of patients to their fullest potential. Occupational therapy evaluation and treatment requires a prescription from the physician.
