Course Description:

The goal of home based therapy services is to achieve intervention outcomes functional to the home and community, and there is no more functional activity for children than play. Play incorporates intervention targets from all disciplines and is the “work” of childhood.  But how do we use play as a framework for intervention?  This course will address the research behind play as an intervention model and will discuss the play behaviors of children with typical play skills and how those are impacted by a range of disabilities.  Participants will learn play based intervention strategies for children, across ages, including strategies for adapting play for children with significant disabilities and resources for supporting parents in the work of play!  Further, they will learn to document play based interventions in a medically necessary plan of care.

About Our Speakers:

Kathy Clapsaddle, M.S., CCC-SLP

Speech Program Director

Kathy is a Clinical Program Director for THERAPY 2000. She completed her Master’s Degree in Speech Language Pathology from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and has been an SLP for over 15 years. She has previously served as an instructor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in the Department of Communication Disorders and as an education specialist for Speech Language Pathology and Therapy Services at Education Service Center Region 13, in which she provided professional development and technical assistance for Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists working in the public schools. She also worked on a statewide Autism Leadership project, which involved the development of web-based autism treatment and Evidence Based Practice resources. She has provided professional education for SLPs across the state on a variety of topics including best practices in service delivery, supporting children with significant communication impairments, and augmentative and alternative communication. She served on the editorial board for the journal EBP Briefs and as the Vice President for Research and Development for the Executive Board of the Texas Speech Language Hearing Association. She currently serves on the Chari-T2000 board.

Stephanie Cone, PT, MPT

Stephanie received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science at Texas A&M University.  In 2002, she earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from UT Southwestern Medical Center.  Since that time she has focused on practicing physical therapy with pediatric populations across various settings.  She began her career at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, specializing in treatments for children with clubfeet, brachial plexus injuries, motor control and juvenile arthritis.  Following working at Texas Scottish Rite, she continued to practice with pediatric populations in both the school based and home health settings.  Stephanie has also been involved in clinical trials with children with neuromuscular disorders and neurological conditions.  She currently serves as the Physical Therapy Clinical Program Director at THERAPY 2000, where she strives to equip other therapists with resources on evidence based practices.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Participants will define playful interventions as a treatment model for pediatric therapies
  2. Participants will task analyze functional home routines to determine opportunities for playful interventions.
  3. Participants will recall typical play development norms across pediatric age groups. (i.e., infant, toddler, preschool, school age).
  4. Participants will list at least one playful intervention at each pediatric age group (i.e., infant, toddler, preschool, school age).
